riot:lyrics. Let’s GO 2012!

riot:lyrics

So we’ve been away for a little while. Sorry for neglecting you. The good news is, we’re back with a bang and ready to get 2012 off to the start it deserves.

Back in the summer we reflected on the riots (see post below) and we hoped that once all the furore died down, that some positive community change would come about in response to what happened. Sadly, it seems that a lot of people were as quick to forget as they were to blame, whilst we know that there are a lot of questions still unanswered, a lot still to be said and acted upon.

Thankfully, we are not alone! We are very pleased to announce that we are collaborating with the wonderful deep:black at their riot:lyrics live event on Thursday 19th January at Rich Mix.

They burn down shops cos they wanna break out of their box,
They ignite fires but they can’t yet feel the fires within themselves,
Do we dare delve, to the deepest places where this all started?

In response to the riots, deep:black set up a blog to capture people’s thoughts, feelings and experiences of the riots in a few lines of lyrical expression. The concept seemed to capture people’s imaginations and thus the idea for riot:lyrics live was born.

The evening will involve responses to the riots by various performance artists (spoken word, poets, musicians), either inspired by the contributions to the blog or from their own material, followed by an interactive session where we hope the audience, artists, young people and community organisations will discuss the issues at stake and collectively generate creative ideas for community action. riot:lyrics live will culminate in a live performance which will have been created by artists over the course of the evening in response to audience contributions.

More news and pretty details to come on the event soon, but for now, put the date in your diaries, spread the word, and holler at us if you’d like to get involved in any way, shape, or even form.

Oh and also, we hope you’ve all heard/read the brilliant Dean Atta’s poem I Am Nobody’s Nigger inspired by Stephen Lawrence.

Summer Breaks

31 Aug

winning djs, wireless sound and dj platinum

As mind the gap returns from an extended summer break it seems like a lot has happened since we were last on the scene.

Lovebox was a massive success, sets from Skinny Macho, Wireless Sound and DJ Platinum all went down brilliantly despite the downpour we were experiencing at the time. If you weren’t there then no worries, it’s pretty likely there’ll be other chances to see these guys again soon so watch this space.

On a slightly less cool note, there was also the small tragedy of the riots. While it’s a good thing that some of the hysterical knee-jerk reaction to these happenings seems to have passed, we hope that a certain level of reaction will persist; the kind of reaction that tries to understand rather than blame.

Understanding is obviously a much harder game and we thought we might try to facilitate this by dedicating our next mind the gap to this end.

The idea is to give a voice to those young people who generally find it hard to get heard.

The event will be held on November 12th and more details will be posted up here as and when they get developed. If you’re interested in being involved in any way then drop us a line, we’d love to hear from you.

MTG was at Industry Takeover the other day, checking some stuff out, listening to some music, watching Mikill Pane govern the open mic contest, and handing out flyers (for our dj competition, deadline 29th May, entries to mindthegapldn@live.com, 5 winners will play LOVEBOX in July), when this girl, Lil Simz, came on stage. We thought it was possibly the best performance of the day so we thought we’d big her up here and spread the swag.

DJ at a Major London Music Festival

19 Apr

It’s pretty simple really, just send a 10-15 minute mix to mindthegapldn@live.com and you could be performing at a festival this summer. Rules above and more details to follow.

Big thanks to Art Against Knives for this opportunity and please keep the 4th June free for the final where, if you haven’t entered yourself, you can dance to the best djs this side of the atlantic and we might even ask you to vote too..

Oh yeah, and we haven’t posted a track we like for a while so… we like this..
